Location

Nottinghamshire

Duration

4 weeks

Scope of Works

18m x 4.5m pond construction including ground clearance, mass excavation, earthwork profiling, lining and bank landscaping

Constructing a pond at this scale - 18 metres long and 4.5 metres wide - is as much a groundworks exercise as it is a landscaping one. Achieving the right result requires experienced plant operators, a careful approach to earthwork profiling, and a methodical installation process to ensure the liner sits correctly and the finished pond holds water as intended.

The project started with a ground clearance phase, removing vegetation and topsoil from the construction area and setting the stripped material aside for later reinstatement around the banks. The main excavation followed, with our 14-tonne machine working across the full length and depth of the pond footprint. Achieving the correct depth profiles is important - the varying depths across a pond of this size create the ecological and aesthetic variety that makes it a feature rather than just a hole.

With the excavation complete, the banks were shaped and the substrate prepared for liner installation. This preparation phase matters more than it might appear: any sharp edges, roots or compacted ridges left in the base and sides can stress or puncture the liner over time. The liner was then installed and the banks finished and seeded.

The finished pond is a significant addition to the landscape. More images will be added to this page as the feature matures and the surrounding landscaping establishes itself.
